An Honest Review: A 3-Star Stay at Axel Hotel, Berlin

I had the opportunity to spend some time at the Axel Hotel during my recent visit to Berlin, Germany’s vibrant capital city. Although my experience was sprinkled with a few hiccups, the hotel still has a lot to offer. Let’s delve into my 3/5 star experience.

What is the Axel Hotel, Berlin:

Axel Hotel Berlin is a boutique hotel that caters predominantly to the LGBTQ+ community, though it is hetero-friendly and welcoming to all guests. Situated in the Schöneberg district, a neighborhood known for its vibrant nightlife and active LGBTQ+ scene, the Axel Hotel provides a unique blend of comfort, style, and inclusivity.

The hotel’s design aesthetic is modern and chic, with each room thoughtfully crafted to be comfortable, stylish, and functional. The accommodation options range from single rooms to expansive suites, each one providing a range of amenities to make guests feel at home.

One of the standout features of the Axel Hotel Berlin is the wellness area, which includes a gym and a spa. These facilities offer a relaxing escape from the bustling city life and provide the perfect way to unwind after a day of sightseeing or business meetings.

The hotel’s gastronomic offering is noteworthy too. The urban bar, located on the ground floor, serves an array of delectable meals and drinks. The hotel also has a rooftop terrace which is a popular spot for guests wanting to enjoy a cocktail while taking in the panoramic views of the city.

In terms of location, Axel Hotel Berlin is within a short walking distance of many popular tourist attractions such as the KaDeWe department store, the Berlin Zoological Garden, and several iconic landmarks. It’s also well-connected with public transportation, making it an ideal base for those looking to explore the wider city.

Despite its numerous positive aspects, the hotel, as with any establishment, isn’t without its occasional issues, such as maintenance and cleaning standards. However, the overall atmosphere, friendly staff, and modern amenities make it a notable choice for both short and long-term stays.

My Experience at the Axel Hotel in Berlin:

Upon arrival at Axel Hotel, the energetic vibe of the city permeated the building. Nestled in the heart of Berlin, the hotel’s location is undoubtedly one of its prime assets. However, my experiences with the accommodation were a mixed bag.

The first snag I encountered was in my initial room, where, unfortunately, the television set had a cracked screen so I wasn’t able to watch any TV. As a frequent traveler, I appreciate the importance of unwinding with a bit of entertainment after a long day of exploring the city. The hotel staff was responsive and relocated me to another room, a process which, although smooth, could have been avoided with a bit of preventative maintenance.

Switching rooms did grant me the opportunity to experience different layouts and designs in the Axel Hotel. Each room carries an aesthetic that fuses modernity with comfort, a unique signature of the hotel that I genuinely appreciated.

However, the second room was not without its problems. It felt a bit dusty, something that a well-vacuumed carpet and a thorough wipe-down could have quickly fixed. On top of that, when I requested cleaning, the service was rather subpar. It seemed the cleaners did the bare minimum, a disappointing discovery in a hotel that otherwise prides itself on quality and service.

Despite these setbacks, the Axel Hotel does offer some notable positives. The hotel’s amenities, including its state-of-the-art gym and rooftop bar, are impressive, and the staff members are generally helpful and polite.

To wrap it up, the Axel Hotel Berlin offers an eclectic mix of commendable and average features. Its great location and the enticing rooftop bar are its high points, but a few service hiccups and maintenance issues pull it back from being a top-tier hotel. If you value location and nightlife above all, this might be the hotel for you. But if you’re seeking a luxury, 5-star experience, you may want to keep looking.
